My wife and I replaced our original mobile battery when a charge lasted less than a day. We followed the manufacturer's recommendation and fully charge (4 bars on the power indicator) the battery before we used it; then used it until the power indicator shows no bar and blinks. We did it for three cycles. We turned off the phone while it's charging.
My wife and I keep in touch with friends and family with Facebook, Yahoo groups and email. With the phone, we favor text message over actual calling. We do not have a land line in our home.
The charge during break-in lasted us a week with the first charge-cycle, 4 days with the second, and back to a week with the third. We've so happy with the convenience of only having to charge the phone once a week that we kept up the practice of the break-in period. We do this by occasionally using our old battery to get us through the day, if necessary, when the power indicator shows only 2 of 4 bars. This means we occasionally have to use our phones to charge up the old battery overnight, although we leave the phone on while it's charging up the old battery.
With our original battery, we always plug our phones in at night to top it off. While the manufacturer's literature said it's OK, I believe most of the time the nightly topping off used up the large but fixed number of recharge cycles in the battery. From our experience, being in an office area far away from windows can cause a big drain in your mobile battery even in standby mode.
