(More customer reviews)A word from experience on Bluetooth headsets and the Motorola Q; and a review of Motorola's H-800:
This review is specifically about using this headset with the Motorola Q. However, my experience is that the same holds true with other Motorola phones.
I have used many different Bluetooth headsets for the Q; and tried many others. While several brands, notably Plantronics, have superior audio; it seems that only Motorola Bluetooth headsets work reliably in other very important areas such as establishing and maintaining connections with the phone; and maximizing the efficiency of the Q's battery. For example; all of the Plantronics, Jabra and even the new JawBone; take a long time to connect and re-connect to the phone. So long, that in many cases your caller will hang up or get flipped to voicemail before you can answer with the headset. More bothersome, is that the non-Motorola headsets periodically disconnect from the phone. I am guessing this is due to some power-saving sleep function these headsets go into. I have also noticed while riding in the car at night, that with a non-Motorola headset, the Q frequently lights up as it is constantly disconnecting, and re-connecting to the Bluetooth device while both the phone and the headset are both idle. A side effect of all this, is a tremendous drain on the Q's battery. All of this has been a major problem for Q users because up until now, Motorola's headsets have not been all that good relative to the competition. I've had the original 850, which had poor volume and several often broke; (I had two of them sever the internal wires that passed through the microphone hinge). Then I had two of the 700s; which had much better volume; but were unreliable. The first one lost its volume after a couple of months. The second one, which I still have sitting on a shelf has a lot of random static; and the battery drains quickly.
The good news is that Motorola has finally come out with a decent quality headset for the Q; it is the new H800. This headset, while not as good of a fit as some of the others; (my favorite in the comfort and sound areas is the Plantronics 510s which I use all day with my office phone). However, the volume is good, the fit is fairly comfortable; and the drain on the Q's battery is significantly less than non-Motorola headsets I've used. I have not tried the other new Motorola headsets such the H670, H500 and H300. These may be fine. However, what I like about the H800 is that you can power it off simply by squeezing it shut; and when you hit the multi-function button, the microphone extends, the headset powers on and re-connects with the Q in half the time the non-Motorola headsets take simply to connect. If you leave the headset on, it connects to the Q almost instantly.
The other feature that I personally like is the ability to turn off the blinking light. I find the light distracting while driving at night; and I have to assume that it puts unnecessary load on the headset's battery. You can turn the light off by holding both volume (up, down) buttons while powering on the headset. The light still blinks while establishing a connection when you first turn it on, and when you turn it off; but it stops the "heartbeat" blink while the headset is on. The light stays in this mode even when powering it off and on again, until you repeat the procedure. I think the days have long past that people find the blinking blue light in their ear to be cool. Finally, while I haven't had the H800 long enough (only a few weeks) to comment on reliability; the design appears to be far sturdier than the other headsets I've tried.
Pros: Instant connect to the Q; power conservation on the Q; volume; ability to turn the blinking light off.
Cons: Ear hook fit takes a little fiddling to get the speaker placed properly. Micro-USB charging port requires adapter (comes with the headset); to use the Q's Mini-USB charger.
