After reading numerous HDTV reviews and "lab tests" I was surprised to see, upon venturing into an actual store, that ALL the HDTV's on display had GREAT pictures. They had, to my eye at least, very little noticeable differences and I realized that I would be quite delighted with ANY of them. However, I DID notice that the reflections from the overhead fluorescent lights varied--from quite distracting to indiscernible--on the different screens.
Since I live in an apartment whose walls are actually windows I decided the reflectance of the screen would be my most important criteria for any daytime viewing enjoyment. So, back to my PC, I found that Sony and Vizio were the brands to consider if one wanted a matte (low/no reflectance) screen. Then, since my viewing area is a somewhat limited 11' deep by 13' wide, I looked at the Viewing Angle of the 5 matte screens I had found. Turned out that this set had a larger Viewing Angle than the 2 Sony's ($1800-$2200) and 2 LED-backlit Vizio's ($1900-$2000) that I was considering.
Since I was "moving up" from a 37" HDTV I initially considered buying a 46"-47" set. But then I ran across a review saying that those "viewing distance charts" no longer apply since a HDTV picture is perfectly sharp even when standing directly in front of it. It concluded that one should buy "as large a screen as you can afford".
After (probably excessive) internet searching I found Amazon had the best price for the VIZIO VF550XVT (55", matte screen, widest Viewing Angle). Ordering was completely "No Hassle" (one Email 7 days later informing me of pending delivery) and it was delivered right to the door of my 11th floor apartment.
I (quite easily) unpacked it, hooked up the FiOs, plugged it in and--with no further adjustments--got an unbelievable picture. When, years ago, I got my first HDTV I was amazed at the added definition of details of High Definition. This set has the HD picture that I've become accustomed to but now I'm, once again, amazed at all the extra details that I see in a 55" screen that I was "missing" on the 37" it replaced.
For me...it's the perfect (and, considering it's features and size, relatively inexpensive) HDTV to enjoy while, over the next 2-4 years, the "TV World" sorts out the 3D quagmire.

You bring up a good point about the glare. My living room gets a lot of light at certain times of the day. That’ll be important to keep in mind while I shop because I’m looking to buy two new HD sets before next week. Now that one of the guys I work with at Dish, got me excited about getting a Hopper, I can’t wait to get one in my place as soon as I can. With three Joeys hooked up to it, not only will I have DVR everywhere but I’ll have HD in all four rooms as well. It seems like a waste to keep any of these old sets around now, hence why I’m looking to get new ones. Thanks again for the info.
